TAMPA BAY BUCCANEERS QUOTE SHEET 8-7-25

HEAD COACH TODD BOWLES

(On whether everyone obeyed protocol and his overall thoughts on the practice)

"I'll see the film and I'll see. I know the effort was there and it was a longer practice against a different team. We'll see the tape."

(On players getting into a brief skirmish during practice)

"Everybody's in the skirmish. Nobody wants to throw a punch. It's not necessary. We're not trying to do that right there. They're not trying to do it as well. If it's hot and you got pads on, it's going to happen. So, welcome to training camp."

(On whether he reviews video of scuffles to see who was involved)

"It's not like I'm going to throw anybody out the game. It's practice, and we make sure everybody's taking care of each other and not putting each other in harm's way."

(On WR Mike Evans jogging off after a touchdown)

"I'll find out. Once he jogged off, he looked healthy jogging off. So, we'll see."

(On OLB Haason Reddick's interception in the two-minute drill)

"It was a good change-of-pace call in two-minute. He came up with the play. We reloaded after that, but he made a big play to get us off the field and possibly some points. So that was huge to see."

(On his assessment of the team's blocking, and the team's ability to cover the middle of the field in pass defense)

"Just blind sight, not even watching the film, I think we can protect up the middle a little better in the pass protection part of it. I did not watch the defense. I thought our [wide] receivers did a good job trying to insert and block and get open and those type of things, but I thought it was a little too much penetration up the middle."

(On his evaluation of the offense overall)

"I'll look at the tape overall to see. We've executed some things and some things we need to work on. We saw another defense and they shifted us to some things that we got to adjust on and we'll get better from that. But, you know, overall the effort was there."

(On NT Vita Vea's weight and fitness)

"I don't know if you can call anybody over 350 [pounds] lean, but he's lost some weight from last year and got down to a point where he's playing very fast and he's playing very tough."

(On WR Jalen McMillan's performance in training camp)

"He's been working. He's been working a lot of different things in camp and we talked about it. Working on his releases, working on snapping out of his routes, doing different things that he can try against certain corners, whether they're big corners or small corners. That shows the progress and maturity for him, understanding to work on his game. He's not just out there running routes. He's working on something every play. So, from a mental standpoint, I think he's had a heck of a camp."

(On McMillan's strength development)

"He's gotten stronger. He's gotten stronger. You can't see it body-wise. He's not going to blow up or anything like that, but just taking care of his body, he's gotten a lot better at that."

(On if S J.J. Roberts has been standing out)

"He's got ability. He's got a lot of ability. We like that he's versatile and can play free [safety] and he can play nickel [cornerback]. I've got to see the defensive side of the ball. I was on the offensive side, but I'll look at the tape and see. He can cover. I saw that he can hit in college off of his tape. We know he can hit. It's just a matter of putting everything together mentally."

(On whether Buccaneers fans will see a lot of starters on Saturday vs. Tennessee)

"Not this Saturday. No."

(On G Cody Mauch's growth)

"Cody's been very consistent and he's a good athlete because he's played a bunch of positions himself. So, he's a very good athlete. He keeps his weight on very well. He's very smart and you're not going to fool him twice and he's a heck of a competitor. So, I can see him winning some of those [reps] against a great player."

(On Tennessee QB Cam Ward)

"I did not see much of him other than warm-up. I know he has a strong arm. I'll go in and see him right now."

QUARTERBACK BAKER MAYFIELD

(On whether this was the first real measuring stick for the first-team offense)

"Yeah, some good, some bad. The thing is just consistency-wise, we had some good plays and the next one, whether it was a mistake or a penalty…It's still somewhat early in camp but you're really trying to iron those things out. So that's the frustrating part. Really won't know or have a lot of feedback on certain things until we go watch the tape, but overall some good hits in the run game, some explosive plays. [We] did a good job in the two-minute situation, before half scenario, of getting down into field goal range. Would love to score a touchdown, but ensuring that we get three points out of that was the main goal. And then, you know, complementary football – get everybody over there, defense goes out there in the same situation, gets a pick. So yeah, that's good stuff."

(On how much joint practices are for experimentation versus fundamentals)

"A little of both. You're not necessarily game-planning for a joint practice. You really watch their tape the day before and kind of generally try and say, 'Okay, what would we call?' without diving into it. But then also what are we still trying to work on? So there's a mix and match of both. What are we still trying to execute at a really, really high level and then what can we really try against this defense? So yeah, some good, some bad."

(On how much he expects to play this preseason)

"Yeah, I mean, the last couple years it's been a drive or two. Getting in, getting out. Whenever that will be, we'll see. But it's execution, getting guys in and out of the huddle, game-like situations, real time, real refs, everybody's on the sideline. It's really the 11 [players] that are out there – once you get the play call, seeing how people operate. And just handling it the right way and looking for penalty-free, mental-error-free ball."

(On being able to bring his own smelling salts to games)

"Yeah. Interesting rule. Might as well walk in with a mason jar of smelling salts on Saturday. But they're still there."

(On what it's like having running backs like Bucky Irving and Rachaad White as receiving options)

"Obviously it's a luxury for us on offense. Especially where they're at in pass protection knowledge of who they're supposed to pick up, and the more they learn…Rachaad has been really, really good at it. [After] year one for Bucky, the more comfortable he gets in that…They get out of the pass protection stuff quicker if they don't have anybody to pick up and they become just that free outlet. With those guys, obviously they can catch like receivers, but just getting the ball [to] them in space is ideal for us, whether it's screen game, checkdowns, or designed pass plays for them. So it's a luxury for us because it creates mismatches."

(On White and Irving catching 90% of their targets)
"I'm not a math guy, but 90% seems pretty good to me. But yeah, it's a luxury for us on offense to have two guys like that."

(On having QB Teddy Bridgewater join the team this week)

"I've been around Teddy just a handful of times – unbelievable guy. I think just his story in general – played a lot of ball, has a lot of experience – but just who he is as a role model for youth, for guys in the locker room, somebody that just wants to help out. You talk to teams that he's been on in the role he's going to be in now, and he's done great things. So, it's really good for us. Obviously, he's still learning the system right now for us, but I'm sure he'll pick it up quick. He has a history with 'Grizz' (Offensive Coordinator Josh Grizzard), too. They were in Miami together. So, just having another set of eyes and ears to be able to communicate and really accomplish what we're trying to get done…I say it to you guys all the time, if we're on the same page, good things are going to happen. And having a voice like that to be able to communicate it more is going to help out a lot."

(On whether he needs a preseason game to be ready)

"I could go without it, but I also love football, so getting out there and having the opportunity to feel that rush, the adrenaline before game time, for the first time in months is always a good feeling. So, whenever I get a chance just to go out there and execute, it's a great opportunity for me."

(On how the protection held up against the Tennessee Titans)

"Pretty good. There were some looks – some unscouted looks – we definitely saw there that'll get you. If you're game-planning and for blitz pickup and whatnot, we'll be on the same page. But yeah, they did a good job of hiding it [with] some pressures from the boundaries that caught us off guard a little bit, but it just comes down to execution and then getting the ball out quick."

(On WR Sterling Shepard's training camp)

"'Shep' (Sterling Shepard) and I have always had good chemistry, but he's a guy that even at his old age, he's still running free. He's coming off two back-to-back really bad injury years and I think he feels extremely healthy right now. So, a guy with that experience that feels good is great for that room. Depth-wise – you guys saw it last year – we need depth in that room. And he's a guy that brings experience and the skill level as well."

(On what he's seen from RB Bucky Irving in year two)

"Just confidence. It's not that he wasn't confident last year, but just a little bit more outgoing. Not that he's ever going to be a vocal guy, but just a little bit more outgoing. Guys understand what he's going to get done, and he's extremely confident in the blitz pickup and the things that we really wanted him to progress in. So it's been a fun progression to see."

(On what it means for WR Emeka Egbuka to make big plays against another team)

"Just any experience for those guys to see it against a different scheme, different guys…You get used to how certain [defensive backs] are going to cover you in camp and so, for him to be able to work some of that stuff is vital experience. But yeah, we trust him."

(On whether skirmishes are inevitable during joint practices)

"It's going to happen. Our group is not going to back down. You get guys shoving people late in the back – we're not going to back down. We're not going to start it because we're not stupid, but we'll finish it."

(On how hard it is for him as a quarterback to stay out of fights, especially when teammates like LT Tristan Wirfs are standing up for him and other teammates)

"He needs to stay his ass on the sideline with those crutches [laughs]. Yeah, I was in the middle of it. It's fun."

OUTSIDE LINEBACKER ANTHONY NELSON

(On how the defense played against Tennessee in joint practice today)
"I think we did a lot of good things. First time going against another scheme, another look, another – different personnel, different receivers. It's always good to get that exposure. I thought we held up really well. We definitely [have] some things to clean up but we have a couple more weeks of camp before we get it rolling, so we [have] time to do it we just [have] to be focused on it."

(On the interception that OLB Haason Reddick had in practice today and the type of player he is)

"I mean I think you said it, versatility is the word. He's a great pass rusher obviously but there is a lot that he brings to the game in a lot of different ways, a lot of different levels. Play makers tend to make plays, it just works out that way. I was happy to see it but I wasn't too surprised."

(On what he looks to do when practicing against another team)

"I think the biggest thing is being able to adjust on the fly. For me specifically it's every tackle sets a little bit [differently], they [have] a little different punch. Being able to adjust to that on the fly and work my stuff and make it fit to what he's doing. That's kind of the thing, you can go across the board with receivers and how they stem routes and stuff like that. It's part of the season when you, week in and week out, play somebody different, you [have] to be able to adjust and counter what other people do – they don't always play exactly the same."

(On if the secondary playing well gives him more time to get to the quarterback)
"We've had a lot of guys breaking on the ball in the secondary, it's been awesome. They've been flying around, sticking to their coverage and making plays on the ball all camp, it's been amazing to see. Like you said, it gives you a little more confidence as a pass rusher. Like you said, sometimes that extra tick is all you need so to know they're back there working is awesome."

SAFETY CHRISTIAN IZIEN

(On getting a better feel for the defense versus the Tennessee Titans in joint practice)

"Yeah, 100%. I think it was a great opportunity for us to see another offense -- another scheme. They are much different than our offense. They got us with a couple plays today that we want to look over. [It is just] good competing against another team and seeing other looks."

(On his high praise from Head Coach Todd Bowles)

"It is always good to hear your coach speak highly of you. It never was my goal to make this team; I wanted to make an impact on this team. [It] just adds more motivation for me for this upcoming season. Last season, a lot of things went down, so just staying ready for whatever moment comes for me."

(On what he has seen from Offensive Coordinator Josh Grizzard's offense)

"We have so much talent. There is so much to look at -- guys like Bucky [Irving], you add Emeka [Egbuka] in there with Mike [Evans] and Chris [Godwin Jr.] – [there] is so much eye-candy with a lot of movement going on. They challenge us every day, just keeping [us] disciplined in our calls -- whether we change it or not -- they do a really good job over there."

(On the additions to the secondary group)

"It is a busy room; there are a lot of guys doing a lot of stuff. Just having the mental capacity to be able to contain it all and be able to make decisions in short periods of time -- things happen fast on the field. Just having guys being able to communicate and play multiple positions is big for us."

(On trash talking with WR Sterling Shepard during training camp)

"I love 'Shep' (Sterling Shepard). I told him yesterday that I commend him on how tough he has been out here. I did not know he was older than Mike [Evans] -- Mike told me that yesterday at practice. I commended him [for] how much he competes with me, fights with me, I am just trying to make him better as he goes on; he tries to make me better. We chirp a lot, but that is who we are."
