TAMPA BAY BUCCANEERS QUOTE SHEET 8-15-22

HEAD COACH TODD BOWLES

(On if he had any updates on player injuries)

"Cam [Gill] has a Lisfranc [injury], so he'll be down. Gio [Bernard] is sore so he'll be down a little bit. And the other one was, [Kenjon] Barner is sore, so he'll be down."

(On LB Grant Stuard's status)

"Grant's sore, too, so he'll be down."

(On extra running at practice)

"A couple guys needed to get in shape, and when one runs, they all run."

(On rookie WR Jerreth Sterns)

"I mean, he's smart and he's tough. He was hurt in the spring so we really couldn't see him. He came back this camp [and] he looks great. He's a very intelligent receiver. Again, he caught a lot of balls in college. He knows all the positions and he took advantage of his opportunity."

(On how productive Sterns was at Western Kentucky despite his size)

"He was, but there's a bunch of them in college nowadays, those type of receivers – quick, shifty, fast. But he's tough also. He'll put his neck in there and block. And he'll play some special teams, so we'll see him the next two weeks [and] see how he does."

(On if he knows if Cam Gill's injury will affect the start of the season)

"Not at the moment I don't. It could be a little bit, it could be more. I'm not sure yet."

(On newly-signed RB Patrick Laird)

"We had him here in [rookie] camp. He's in shape, he can run. With 'Gio' [Bernard] down and [Kenjon] Barner down, we needed an extra back and a set of legs to come in, and he knew the system. So, we brought him back in because he looked good when we worked him out."

(On if he was okay with last year's run-pass balance on offense)

"As long as the scoreboard is the same, I'll take either one. If they take away the run to make us throw, we've got to throw it. If they allow us to run and try to take away the pass, we've got to run it. So, whatever they're giving us and whatever we can take advantage of, that's what we want to do."

(On if there were any players who stood out to him on game tape review)

"I think all the guys pretty much that I said Saturday after the game – it looked the same on tape. It looked the same on tape. Everybody else had solid performances but those guys stood out."

(On rookie TE Ko Kieft lining up as a blocker in the backfield)

"Ko can play on the ball and he can play off the ball – that's the beauty of it. He can play the 'Y,' he can play the 'F' and he can play the 'U.' We're going to try to use them all over. He's a good blocker – we understand that. That's why we got him. It's not necessarily just the fullback position, but he allows us to get in different formations and do different things."

(On S Logan Ryan not practicing)

"He's sore. We gave him some days off."

(On if making the initial roster cuts are a matter of surplus at certain positions or what happens in practice)

"It's a combination of both of them. What you see in practice, what you see on tape, how the other guys stack up against you. It's always tough when cut days come because you don't ever want to ruin anyone's dream, but the nature of the business is we've got to let some people go. We'll put our heads together, depending on who's short at what position and what we need and who we can afford to let go. We'll make a decision that way."

(On if he's staying in touch with QB Tom Brady and if Brady is still on the same schedule to return)

"Yes."

WIDE RECEIVER JAELON DARDEN

(On seeing his hard work pay off and recording a touchdown in the first preseason game)

"[It] was definitely a big moment for me, but I plan on doing that a lot more. So, kind of just trying to keep my head straight and keep going forward."

(On his off-season preparation)

"Honestly, like I said, it was just a lot more studying – me taking that next step and sitting down to make sure I [know] where I need to be, when I need to be there. Everything else is God's gift – just go out there and do what He blessed me with. That's kind of it really."

(On which teammate has helped him the most)

"I'll say Julio [Jones], for sure. He basically told me to slow everything down because the type of game I'm playing, I'm playing kind of fast, so sometimes I'm overthinking things at times. But he's telling me just slow down and go to my go-to moves and help myself get open and do what I do best. So that's kind of what I've been taking in from Julio."

(On catching a pass from QB Blaine Gabbert)

"[Blaine Gabbert] definitely throws a hard ball, but Blaine's my guy. He kind of took me under his wing and helped me with the offense, for sure. My first year here, he was definitely getting me in the right spot because I was all over the place, but it's definitely been a blessing learning from him because he's a great quarterback as well, so I'm kind of happy for that."

(On if he is motivated by the success of Tyler Johnson and the other Buccaneers receivers)

"It kind of turns me up because at the end of the day, we're trying to help each other and make each other play better. That's kind of how our receiver room is – we're a brotherhood. At the end of the day, if he [does] good, I'm happy for him, but I have to step my game up too because I want to be on the same level he's on. So that's kind of how we go about it."

WIDE RECEIVER JERRETH STERNS

(On the competition in the wide receiver room)

"I'm just trying to take it one day at a time. I just get to learn from some of the best to ever do it. I just try to take in what those guys say and just mimic what they do and how they approach practice and in the meeting rooms every day."

(On his performance in preseason Week 1 against the Dolphins)

"I wasn't really worried about that at the time, I just wanted to win going into the game. It was cool with all that happening and everything. I've been dreaming about playing in the NFL since I was seven years old, so it was just a blessing to even be on that field."

(On QB Kyle Trask's performance and specifically the final drive of the game)

"He was really cool, calm, and collected. He had everything under control and kept everybody together and kept everybody's head on straight. He made sure we knew it was third down, fourth down, you know what I'm saying. So I think he did a real good job of leading everybody and getting the job done."

(On what he thought when the Buccaneers gave him a call)

"It was crazy honestly. Growing up watching Tom Brady and all the things he would do and I'm like, 'Oh gosh, I really go get to be around these guys?' It was really just a blessing, and I was just excited."

(On if his teammates were surprised, he was the triple crown winner in college football)

"[A] couple of them -- they didn't even know really. You know the bigger name receivers in college football. A couple of them guys said, 'You led college football?' And I was like 'yeah,' because I don't really talk a lot so they probably didn't know me or anything."
