The Tampa Bay Buccaneers set a new course for their talented offense on Thursday morning, hiring Zac Robinson as offensive coordinator. Robinson most recently spent the last two seasons in the same position on Raheem Morris's staff with the Atlanta Falcons.
Robinson brings a background in Sean McVay's Los Angeles Rams system, a strong relationship with quarterback Baker Mayfield and two prolific seasons with the Falcons to his new post in Tampa.
"We are excited to welcome Zac Robinson as our next offensive coordinator," said Head Coach Todd Bowles. "Zac is one of the bright offensive minds in our game, and during the interview process, I was very impressed with his plan for getting the most out of the talent we have on that side of the ball. He has a very good understanding of the strengths of our top offensive players from his time in the division the past two years and I am very confident in his ability to teach and develop our young players."
Robinson is the second coordinator the Buccaneers have hired to Todd Bowles' staff this week, following the addition of new Special Teams Coordinator Danny Smith on Tuesday. Robinson replaces Josh Grizzard, who was one of five assistants with whom the team parted ways on January 8.
The Buccaneers' offense took a step back in 2025 after ranking in the NFL's top five in yards, points scored, passing yards, rushing yards and third-down percentage in 2024, in part due to a long list of injuries. However, the team still features most of the core of that 2024 attack, including Mayfield, all five offensive line starters, Chris Godwin, Bucky Irving and Jalen McMillan. Franchise icon Mike Evans is a pending free agent but could also return to the team, and wide receiver Emeka Egbuka added more firepower to the group as one of the NFL's top rookie producers in 2025.
Robinson spent five seasons (2019-23) on McVay's staff in Los Angeles before following Raheem Morris to Atlanta in 2024. In his first season as the Falcons' play-caller, the team finished sixth in the NFL in net yards per game (369.8), eighth in yards per play (5.79), fifth in passing yards per game (239.3) and 10th in rushing yards per game (130.5). Atlanta ranked 14th in yards and eighth in rushing yards last season despite losing starting quarterback Michael Penix for the second half of the season.
The Buccaneers have had plenty of in-person opportunities to see Robinson command an offense. In the four games between Tampa Bay and Atlanta during Robinson's tenure as OC, the Falcons averaged 444.5 net yards of offense, 29.0 points and 24.5 first downs.
Robinson, who spent time as a quarterback in the NFL with the Patriots, Seahawks, Lions and Bengals, launched his coaching career in 2019 when he joined McVay's staff as an assistant quarterbacks coach. He spent 2020 as the team's assistant wide receivers coach, then went back to his original position in 2021. In 2022 and 2023, Robinson served as the Rams' pass game coordinator and quarterbacks coach, the role he was in when Mayfield signed with Los Angeles late in the 2022 campaign after being waived by the Carolina Panthers.
With roughly 48 hours of preparation, Mayfield led the Rams to a comeback 17-16 victory over the Las Vegas Raiders, directing a 98-yard touchdown drive in the game's final 90 seconds on Thursday Night Football. Mayfield finished the season in Los Angeles, playing in five games with four starts, before signing with the Buccaneers in the following offseason. In three seasons since, Mayfield has thrown for 12,238 yards and 95 touchdowns, with a passer rating of 97.4.
During Robinson's two seasons as the Rams' pass game coordinator, Matthew Stafford and Puka Nucua earned Pro Bowl berths. In 2023, Nacua recorded the most receptions (105) and receiving yards (1,486) by a rookie in NFL history.
Robinson was a seventh-round draft pick by the New England Patriots in 2010 after playing his collegiate ball at Oklahoma State. He is a native of Littleton, Colorado.
