Baker Mayfield Expected Back When Bucs Return to Practice Tuesday

Starting QB Baker Mayfield missed two practices with a sore throwing hand but is likely to return to action this week for a trio of workouts that includes a joint practice with the Titans on Thursday

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers will resume practicing at their 2025 training camp on Tuesday after two days away from the field. For starting quarterback Baker Mayfield, it has actually been four days of inactivity.

Mayfield was held out of practice on Friday and Saturday for what Head Coach Todd Bowles called a sore right (throwing) hand. At the time, Bowles said the injury was not a significant concern, and on Saturday he said Mayfield will be back in action soon.

"He'll be back next week," said Bowles.

Indeed, the Buccaneers expect Mayfield to be on the field on Tuesday for the team's two-hour, fully-padded practice. Given the command of the offense that the eighth-year passer has shown over the course of two Pro Bowl campaigns in Tampa, it's hardly a problem for him to miss a couple August workouts. That said, his return to action is well-timed because this week's work will include a joint practice with the Tennessee Titans at the AdventHealth Training Center on Thursday.

The advantage of joint practices in the middle of a long run of repetitive camp practices is that the other team offers unexpected looks and every play won or lost is unequivocal. In a typical camp practice involving just the Bucs' own roster, big plays such as interceptions are double-edged swords because they are both good and bad plays for one side of the ball.

In addition, joint practices have become popular around the NFL – the Buccaneers will also have one in Pittsburgh against the Steelers next week – because they generally offer more work to the starting units and some scripted situations that might not occur in a preseason game.

"They're different," said Bowles. "You can run everything and still get your starters a bunch of work against their starters. The preseason games allows the younger guys a chance to make the team and see what they can do under the lights."

In his two seasons at the helm of the Bucs' offense, Mayfield has thrown for 8,544 yards and 69 touchdowns while compiling a passer rating of 100.7. He will be operating under his third offensive coordinator in three years in 2025, as Josh Grizzard takes over for Liam Coen, who landed the head coach position in Jacksonville. However, Grizzard's promotion from within the ranks ensures a certain amount of continuity from last year. Mayfield should have a full grasp on the system to start the season, and his return to practice after a short absence will help him get even more comfortable in the offense before Week One arrives.
