Takeaways from Buccaneers-Chiefs | Preseason Week 2

Top observations from the Buccaneers’ 16-15 comeback victory over the Chiefs in Preseason Week Two at Raymond James Stadium

takeaways pre week 2

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers fought from behind to defeat the Kansas City Chiefs, 16-15, at Raymond James Stadium and move to 2-0 in the preseason docket. While the Chiefs' second-teamers made their debut early on, the Buccaneers began the clash with their starting lineup. Tampa Bay's defense stifled the Chiefs' progress on offense, forcing two-straight three-and-out's to start the game. On the opposite side of the ball, Tampa Bay's first-team offense was unable to cash in with points as Baker Mayfield completed two out of four attempts for 10 yards on the opening two drives. The Bucs went with a run-heavy script early with Bucky Irving rushing for 14 yards on three totes. Tampa Bay was held scoreless in the first half as the Chiefs kicked three field goals for a 9-0 advantage.

Offensive Outlook

After Mayfield's two drives, Jake Browning took over the signal-caller duties. He completed nine of 12 passing attempts for 84 yards, and added 14 yards on the ground. The offense was unable to reach the end zone until the third frame when undrafted rookie Jalon Daniels entered the showdown. He continued his production, engineering three-consecutive scoring drives. He concluded the ballgame with 71 passing yards, completing nine of 14 attempts. Daniels, a dual-threat playmaker, added 19 rushing yards and a two-yard touchdown pass to Ko Kieft in the third quarter for good measure. In addition to Kieft, running back Sean Tucker found the end zone on a one-yard touchdown rush in the fourth that was prompted by a critical and elusive scramble by Daniels, while Dean Patterson IV and Kam Johnson led the team in receiving with 56 yards each. On the first scoring drive that culminated in a touchdown, Daniels went five-for-five on the drive with 39 passing yards and 10 rushing yards, including a precise touch throw to Patterson along the sideline for a 24-yard pickup. Patterson perfectly executed the toe tap maneuver, getting both feet in bounds with superb body control for the reception.

Defensive Roundup

The Buccaneers' first-team defense shut down Kansas City on the visiting team's first two possessions, as Rueben Bain Jr. and Yaya Diaby led the charge. Anthony Nelson became the defensive catalyst, executing timely clutch plays to ignite the defensive effort at Raymond James Stadium. Nelson posted 1.5 sacks, including a strip sack of Chiefs' quarterback Justin Fields in the first quarter. Later in the exhibition as Fields was flushed out of the pocket, Mohamed Kamara and Nelson tracked him down for a combined knockdown.  The momentum-shifting play came in the fourth when the Bucs were down by five, 15-10. Cornerback Roman Parodie intercepted the ball and the Bucs were able to capitalize for their first lead of the game. Parodie picked off the bobbled ball in the air and showcased his understanding of where the help was on the play and effectively diagnosed. The Bucs' defense held strong during the following Kansas City possession, and the home team never relinquished the lead.
