The Tampa Bay Buccaneers have re-signed running back Owen Wright, who was their leading rusher during the preseason, adding him to their practice squad on Wednesday. To make room on that 17-man unit, the team released guard Sua Opeta.
Wright, who had previously spent time with the Baltimore Ravens, signed with the Buccaneers on July 31, near the beginning of training camp. He appeared in all three preseason games, rushing 26 times for a team-high 100 yards and a touchdown and adding four catches for 12 yards. He also returned one kickoff for 25 yards.
The Buccaneers are currently down one running back with starter Bucky Irving recovering from foot and shoulder injuries, ailments that caused him to miss last week's game in Seattle. Rachaad White, Sean Tucker and Josh Williams remain on the active roster and Wright is now the lone back on the practice squad.
Wright, who split his college career between Monmouth and William & Mary, originally entered the league as an undrafted free agent with the Ravens in 2023. He spent his rookie season on the practice squad and then landed on injured reserve for all of 2024.
Opeta first joined the Buccaneers as an unrestricted free agent in 2024 but ended up on injured reserve that season after suffering a knee injury early in training camp. He signed back with the Buccaneers this past offseason but was released in late August and then added to the practice squad on September 18.
