The first truly jaw-dropping moment of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers' 2025 season came in the final minute of the season-opener in Atlanta. Wide receiver Emeka Egbuka kick-started a truly remarkable first month of his NFL career by beating cornerback Mike Hughes with a head fake to the outside and catching a 25-yard game-winning touchdown pass from Baker Mayfield in stride in the back of the end zone.
That was far from the last moment that had Buccaneer fans springing out of their seats in amazed delight. The 2025 season didn't end the way the Bucs anticipated after their 6-2 start, and the team's string of four straight NFC South championships was snapped on a tiebreaker, but there were plenty of very exciting moments along the way. Today, we're going to debate which one was the most exciting.
The Buccaneers have begun their transition from the end of the 2025 season to the start of what is already an eventful 2026 offseason thanks to the changes already made and still coming to the coaching staff. Staff Writer/Reporter Brianna Dix, Buccaneers.com Contributor Gabriel Kahaian and I have decided to tackle a number of topics about both seasons in a series of our weekly Roundtable articles between now and the start of the NFL's new league year in March. We'll start with a few looks back at the 2025 campaign before turning our attention to a variety of topics regarding what lies ahead as the Bucs try to climb back to the top of the NFC South mountain.

This is the last of our Roundtables that is going to deal with the 2025 season, before we turn our attention to some important upcoming matters in 2026. In this case, we will be trying to pinpoint the single most exciting play of the Bucs' season. Does Egbuka's catch stay at the top of the list, or was it even his biggest moment of the season? How about Anthony Nelson's game-changing pick-six in New Orleans, or Jamel Dean's 55-yard defensive score against the Jets? Mayfield certainly had his share of exploits, such as the 28-yard strike to Egbuka to set up the game-winner against New York. There's plenty to choose from.
We are not allowed to duplicate answers, so the order in which the three of us get to attack these question could matter. It's my turn to go first, with Bri picking second and Gabe finishing it off.

Scott Smith: Baker Mayfield 15-Yard Scramble vs. 49ers
I have a strong feeling that all three of us would have this play at the top of the list, so I'm fortunate that our rotation gave me the first pick this week. Why, it's almost like I planned it this way from the start! No, I would never do that.
Before we get to it, let's rewind to 2024, when Baker Mayfield made one of the most remarkable plays I've ever seen from a quarterback. Facing the San Francisco 49ers with his team down by three points and the clock showing less than two minutes left in regulation, Mayfield dropped back on a do-or-die fourth-and-seven from his own 37. He was pressured immediately by Nick Bosa but was able to hold the star edge-rusher at bay with a stiff-arm…and then he just kept stiff-arming Bosa for approximately 15 horizontal yards while keeping his throwing arm free and his feet underneath him. As he neared the sideline, Mayfield somehow got off a lob that went over another 49ers defender and reached Rachaad White one yards past the line to gain. The Bucs would go on to tie the game at 20-20 with 41 seconds left on a Chase McLaughlin field goal.
Unfortunately, the 49ers used those remaining seconds to get in position for their own field goal, this one a game-winner as time expired. Mayfield's fourth-down play was probably the most remarkable one made all season by a Buccaneers player, but it was impossible to fully celebrate it as a top moment of the 2024 season because of the game's final outcome.
Well, no such problem this time around! My choice for the Buccaneers' most exciting play of the 2025 season again involved Mayfield pulling off what seemed impossible to get a crucial first down in the second half of a tight game against the 49ers at Raymond James Stadium. And this time the Bucs won the game.
You remember the play. The Bucs were clinging to a 20-19 lead in the third quarter but the visitors had all the momentum. It was third-and-14 from Tampa Bay's 41, and once again Mayfield was quickly pressured by the 49ers' pass rush. In this case, two defenders appeared to have him down all the way back at the 29. Somehow, Mayfield escaped and began a mad dash up the field and to the right. Technically, he needed 14 yards for a first down, but in reality he was 26 yards away from the sticks when he escaped the near-sack. He then ran around one defender, fought his way through another and as he was finally going down, he managed to extend his arm forward to put the ball past the line to gain just before he hit the ground.
All-Pro left tackle Tristan Wirfs could only watch in amazement.
"I actually got him hit on that third-and-14, and he got out of it," said Wirfs. "I was like, 'Holy crap!' And then [to] watch him go and pick up 15 yards and stretch for a first down… To watch Baker go to work every week is incredible. We love him to death. We love Baker. He is a dawg – I say it week-in and week-out. Him putting us on his back every week and doing his thing is incredible to watch."
Two plays later, Mayfield hit Tez Johnson on a 45-yard touchdown pass and the "MVP!" chants at Raymond James Stadium lingered for minutes. The Bucs would go on to win, 30-19.
Brianna Dix: Emeka Egbuka's 77-Yard Touchdown vs. Eagles
There are many plays I debated naming for this prompt. I nearly chose Baker Mayfield's 11-yard touchdown to Sterling Shepard in Week Five at Seattle given the challenging nature of the play. Mayfield rolled to the left to buy time and Shepard continued working inside after the fade. As he broke inside, Mayfield had the ball on his chest. He made one of the most difficult throws you will see a right-handed quarterback make – across the chest, off-platform while running laterally. While that play was "exciting" for me given the nature and nuance of it, I understand for most fans, other moments would usurp that one in their mental archives. So, I decided to go with rookie Emeka Egbuka's 77-yard touchdown catch against the Eagles in Week Four.
In that outing, the Buccaneers got off to a slow start at Raymond James Stadium. The Eagles found success at rotating safeties and disguising shell coverage (two safeties deep), while blanketing in coverage. Down 24-6 in the third frame, Tampa Bay needed an offensive spark.
Mayfield hit Egbuka on a one-play drive that trimmed the Eagles' deficit with eight minutes left in the third. Off a play-action keeper and ensuing naked bootleg, Mayfield threaded the needle between two defenders and connected with Egbuka on the clear-out route for a 77-yard score. Egbuka was not the initial target but he kept running vertically downfield. The safety got caught up with his eyes in the wrong place and Mayfield took advantage, providing the necessary surge.
"Emeka [Egbuka] did a hell of a job on a play action keeper – just his concentration through the catch," described Mayfield. "[Reed] Blankenship was diving for it, so whatever you want to say – distraction drill – he focused through the catch and obviously extending it for the touchdown."
The Bucs ended up losing to the Eagles 31-25 but the club fought their way back from a 21-3 deficit, ignited by the long touchdown to Egbuka. In that matchup, the Bucs' defense did not allow Philadelphia to complete a single pass in the second half but Egbuka became the catalyst on offense in Week Four.
Gabriel Kahaian: Tez Johnson's Flip vs. 49ers
Back during the Bye Week, we posed a similar question regarding our topic for this week's Roundtable. The debate centered around identifying the "top offensive moment" from the first half of the season. I had the first pick and decided on Baker Mayfield's game-saving fourth-down scramble against the Houston Texans on Monday Night Football in Week Two. Looking back, I understand Mayfield's Houdini-like escape against the 49ers that Scott chose was the more technically-impressive play, however, I valued my selection slightly higher because of the game's situation. It was do-or-die in the fourth quarter, first down or game over and Mayfield delivered. Jumping forward to today's topic, that scramble is still available for my selection. Should be an easy pick, right? Not so fast my friend.
If you take a close look at this week's question, we are not necessarily looking for the best play of the season, but the most exciting. That word is important! Despite having my previous pick open for the taking, it did not end in one of the most exciting plays in all of football— a touchdown. With that in mind, I have just the play.
Two plays after Scott's selection, the Bucs lined up at San Francisco's 45-yard line with a one-point lead late in the third quarter. The crowd was still buzzing thanks to Mayfield's heroics a couple plays prior. Sean Tucker motioned to the left as four receivers waited to run their routes. After the ball was snapped, Mayfield stood in the pocket while the offensive line held strong. Downfield, seventh-round rookie Tez Johnson recognized the coverage and signaled to his quarterback that he was wide open. Mayfield took notice and fired a rocket into the air. Johnson sprinted to track it down and went airborne, parallel to the ground in order to bring in the reception in the end zone. Raymond James stadium erupted. The former Oregon Duck turned to the crowd and asked whether he should break out his signature touchdown celebration. Johnson did not hesitate, executing a series of flips (a round-off Arabian) right in front of the Krewe's faithful. It was Johnson's first-career touchdown and the Buccaneers went on to win 30–19.
With the long-bomb touchdown, the acrobatics and the home crowd in full roar, this was undeniably the most exciting play of the Bucs' 2025 season.
