data crunch

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers lost to the Miami Dolphins, 20-17, on Sunday, dropping to 7-9 on the season with their seventh defeat in their last eight outings. The Buccaneers outgained the Dolphins, 380 total yards to 298, but lost the turnover battle three to zero, marking their first three-turnover game of the season.

The loss was Tampa Bay's fourth in a row, all by four or fewer points. The Buccaneers have now played eight games this season that were decided by three or fewer points; they won the first five before dropping the most recent three. Those eight games decided by three points or fewer are the most in a single season in franchise history.

The Buccaneers fought to the end, scoring on a four-yard Baker Mayfield to Mike Evans touchdown pass with 50 seconds remaining to pull within three points, but their ensuing onside kick failed. For Evans, it was the 108th scoring catch of his career, moving him to within three of matching Hall of Famer Tony Gonzalez for the ninth most in NFL history.

Evans caught three passes for 31 yards in the game, pushing his career receiving yardage total to 13,018. That made the future Hall of Famer just the 22nd player in league history to top 13,000 career receiving yards. Evans got to the 13,000-yard mark in his 175th career game, becoming the eighth-fastest player to hit that mark.

Evans is also now just the 10th player in NFL history to record 13,000-plus receiving yards and 100-plus touchdown catches, joining Jerry Rice, Randy Moss, Terrell Owens, Cris Carter, Marvin Harrison, Larry Fitzgerald, Tony Gonzalez, Tim Brown and Steve Largent. Eight of those nine players are in the Pro Football Hall of Fame and the ninth, Larry Fitzgerald, is a semifinalist for the Class of 2026 in his first year of eligibility.

Mayfield threw for 346 yards against the Dolphins, his second-highest total of the season, while completing 33 of 44 passes. That marked his 13th 100-yard passing game since joining the Buccaneers, playoffs included, which ranks third in team history behind Jameis Winston (27) and Tom Brady (24). Since joining the Buccaneers in 2023, Mayfield is tied for third in the NFL in 300-yard passing games, postseason included.

2. Dak Prescott, Cowboys: 14

Mayfield threw two touchdown passes on Sunday, the one noted above to Evans plus a five-yarder to Chris Godwin to cap the Buccaneers' first drive of the game. That gave Mayfield 25 touchdown passes on the season, a mark he has now reached in each of his three seasons as Tampa Bay's starter. That tied Tom Brady for the most seasons with 25-plus touchdown passes in Buccaneers history. Prior to 2020, the Buccaneers as a franchise had seen five total seasons in which their quarterback threw 25 or more touchdown passes. Between Brady and Mayfield, the Bucs have now witnessed that accomplishment in six straight seasons (2020-25). Mayfield joins Buffalo's Josh Allen and Detroit's Jared Goff as the only quarterbacks to throw 25 or more touchdown passes in each of the last three seasons.

Mayfield's favorite targets in Sunday's game were Godwin and second-year receiver Jalen McMillan, each of whom caught seven passes for 100-plus yards. McMillan's seven grabs went for a career-high 114 yards, marking his first 100-yard receiving game in the NFL. Godwin's 59-yard catch-and-run on the Bucs' final touchdown drive accounted for half of his 108 yards on the day, marking his 24th career 100-yard game, playoffs included. That is second in team history behind Mike Evans' 43 100-yard receiving games.

McMillan and Godwin were the first pair of Bucs teammates to record 100-yard receiving performances in the same game since Godwin and Evans did so against Carolina on Jan. 1, 2023, late in the 2022 season. The last time the Buccaneers had a pair of receivers surpass 100 yards in the same game that did not include either Godwin or Evans was Nov. 23, 2014, when Vincent Jackson and Louis Murphy pulled off the feat against Chicago.

Rookie wide receiver Emeka Egbuka caught three passes for 20 yards against the Dolphins, giving him a team high 62 grabs for 930 yards in 2025. He needs 70 yards in the regular season finale against Carolina on Saturday to become just the third rookie in franchise history to reach 1,000 receiving yards.

Most Receiving Yards in a Season by a Rookie, Buccaneer History

  1. Michael Clayton, 2004: 1,193
  2. Mike Evans, 2014: 1,051
  3. Mike Williams, 2010: 964
  4. Emeka Egbuka, 2025: 930
  5. Lawrence Dawsey, 1991: 818

Fellow rookie Tez Johnson caught two passes for 19 yards against the Dolphins, giving him 305 receiving yards on the season. He and Egbuka are the first pair of drafted rookie teammates to hit 300 receiving yards and five touchdown catches each since New England's Rob Gronkowski and Aaron Hernandez in 2010. Those are the only two pairs of rookie teammates to do so since 2000.

Johnson is also one of 10 different Buccaneers to surpass 300 yards from scrimmage in 2025, which is the most for any team this season, one more than the Kansas City Chiefs and the Chicago Bears. In fact, the Buccaneers have now tied the all-time NFL record for most players with 300-plus yards from scrimmage in the same season. The feat has accomplished nine times, including twice by Tampa Bay. In addition to Johnson, the other nine Bucs on the list this season are Egbuka, Bucky Irving, Rachaad White, Cade Otton, Sterling Shepard, Sean Tucker, Godwin, Mayfield and Evans.

Mayfield makes the list with his 351 rushing yards, which is just 27 behind the career-best mark of 378 he set last season. He scrambled three times for 16 yards against the Dolphins, with two of those three runs successfully converting third downs. This season, Mayfield has run on third down 27 times and picked up a first down on 20 of those carries. That's the second-highest third-down running success rate among all NFL quarterbacks in 2025.
