Todd Bowles was in his third year as the Tampa Bay Buccaneers' defensive coordinator in 2021 when the team beat Dallas in Week One and Atlanta in Week Two for its first 2-0 start to the season in four years. He then took over as the Buccaneers' head coach in 2022 and in each of the next three seasons the Buccaneers again started out 2-0. In none of those four occasions, however, did the Buccaneers then win their third game, and the last 3-0 start in team history remains 2005, now two decades in the past.
On Sunday, as the Buccaneers play their home opener against the New York Jets at Raymond James Stadium Bowles and company will have a fifth crack at that 3-0 opening. Bowles, who was also the Jets' head coach from 2015-18, knows the Buccaneers can't afford to take their foot off the gas now, even against a team that comes in with an 0-2 record.
"Well, the start is good when you want to go 2-0," he said. "The fact is, we haven't been 3-0. So that's a problem that we've got to try to solve. We're looking more ahead for that as opposed to just being happy being 2-0. It's a long season. We've got a lot of work to do and we've got a lot of things to get better at. Like I said, we haven't been 3-0. So, that's a big challenge for us this week as opposed to sitting there and saying we're 2-0 and being happy and then getting our asses kicked on Sunday."
The visiting Jets will be turning to a new quarterback, as their starter for the first two weeks, Justin Fields, suffered a concussion last Sunday against Buffalo and will not be cleared in time for the game in Tampa. New York happens to have a very experienced backup in 15th-year veteran Tyrod Taylor, who has 58 career starts and some of the same mobility that Fields brings to the offense.
"[We] just need to make sure we stay in the rush lanes and then play… and that is going to be the biggest thing," said safety Tykee Smith, who is the Bucs' leading tackler through two weeks."The rushing and the coverage work together, so [for] us to be able to play off one another and maintain him in the pocket [is important]."
Taylor has some explosive weapons to work with, most notably running back Breece Hall and wide receiver Garrett Wilson. Hall has rushed for 136 yards and 4.7 yards per carry through the first two weeks and has exhibited some of the tackle-breaking ability that made him a rising star in the NFL's running back ranks in 2023. Wilson leads the Jets with 11 catches for 145 yards and a touchdown and is coming off three straight 1,000-yard seasons to begin his career.
"I think Breece is one of the best backs in the league," said Bowles. "He's got size, he's got speed, and he's got wiggle. So, that makes him tough to bring down. They have a very good offensive line behind that. Garrett possesses speed hands, and route running. So that's always going to be a problem when you can have all three of those things. He's been a good wide receiver in this league."
The Buccaneers will have their starting quarterback – Baker Mayfield was on the injury report with foot and toe issues but was a full participant in Wednesday's practice – but question marks in front of him. Already without All-Pro left tackle Tristan Wirfs and using a shuffled lineup with center Graham Barton shifted to the edge, the Bucs could also now be without right tackle Luke Goedeke and right guard Cody Mauch. Neither practiced on Wednesday after getting hurt in Houston. Mayfield has played against defenses led by new Jets Head Coach Aaron Glenn in the past and expects New York's group to be very aggressive on Sunday.
"Obviously, Aaron being in Detroit, the way they're coached overall under Dan Campbell and that philosophy of [having] a complete unit – physical, they play really, really hard," said Mayfield. "Their defensive coordinator, Steve Wilks, is somebody I've been around in a couple different places. They just fly around, do what they're supposed to do, and do it at a high level."
The biggest star on that defense is fourth-year cornerback Sauce Gardner, who was a first-team All-Pro selection in each of his first two seasons. The Bucs saw Houston put their elite cornerback, Derek Stingley Jr. on Mike Evans for the entire game on Monday night and think the same could happen with Gardner and the Bucs' top receiver.
"First of all, Stingley is a great player – even better in person," said Mayfield. "Sauce has the size, tools, and measurables to play [cornerback]. [He is a] guy that's going to be able to match up. Normally their top guys follow Mike, but now we have 'Mek' (Emeka Egbuka) too. We'll see how they handle it. When [Gardner] is able to get his hands on you, it's tough to get off the line. He can run in phase. He's just a good overall [cornerback]."
The Buccaneers are favored by 6.5 points in their home opener, but the more likely scenario is that the game once again comes down to some key moments in the fourth quarter. Safety Antoine Winfield Jr. says the outcome may come down to something that has been completely missing on both sides in the Bucs' 2-0 start: turnovers.
How do the Bucs get to 3-0 for the first time in two decades, Winfield was asked? "For us, 100% takeaways. We have to take the ball away -- we still have not gotten one yet -- that is the plan for us: get some takeaways."

ALL-TIME HEAD-TO-HEAD SERIES
The Buccaneers don't have an impressive all-time record against the Jets, but they have won the last two meetings. In fact, their wild 28-24 victory at the Meadowlands in the penultimate game of the 2021 season marked the first road win the franchise had ever notched in the series with the Jets. Overall, New York still leads the series, 10-3.
That late-season win in 2021 helped the Buccaneers finish their Super Bowl LV title-defense season strong and win the NFC South with a team-record 13 regular-season victories. Tampa Bay trailed 24-17 heading into the fourth quarter and cut that lead to four points with a Ryan Succop field goal midway through the period. The Bucs were still trailing by four points when they got the ball back just before the two-minute warning, and that's when Tom Brady led one of his patented game-winning drives, eventually hitting Cyril Grayson on a 33-yard touchdown pass with 15 seconds left. This was also the game in which wide receiver Antonio Brown famously quit in the middle of the contest and threw his jersey into the crowd while running out of the stadium.
Tampa Bay also owns the most recently victory played in their home park, a 15-10 thriller in 2017 at Raymond James Stadium. Patrick Murray hit all three of his field goals and Charles Sims caught a fourth-quarter touchdown pass from Ryan Fitzpatrick to build a 15-3 and the Bucs recovered the onside kickoff with 27 seconds left after a 38-yard Robby Anderson touchdown.
New York's most recent win in the series came on their field in 2013 and was also a low-scoring, tight affair. The Bucs went to the Meadowlands for their season opener and ran out to a 14-5 lead on touchdowns from Mike Williams and Doug Martin. The Jets stormed back, however, and the lead changed hands three times in the fourth quarter on two field goals by the Jets' Nick Folk and one by the Bucs' Rian Lindell. Folk's second field goal, a 48-yarder, was made possible by a controversial unnecessary roughness call on Lavonte David, who was deemed to have hit quarterback Geno Smith out of bounds after a 10-yard scramble. Without those 15 extra yards, the Jets likely would have had to settle for a last-play Hail Mary attempt.
The Buccaneers and Jets haven't met each other in back-to-back seasons since 1990-91 and thus haven't had much reason to build up any enmity. However, the series did briefly get contentious in the mid-'80s.
Tampa Bay's final game of the 1984 season was at home against the Jets and ended in the first victory in the series for the Buccaneers. The 41-21 decision didn't mean much to the bottom line for a 6-10 Tampa Bay team, but the Bucs were chasing something else, as James Wilder was closing in on the NFL's single-season record for yards from scrimmage. In that pursuit, Head Coach John McKay tried an onside kick late in the fourth quarter to steal another possession. When that failed, the Buccaneers' defense stepped aside and let Johnny Hector score a touchdown so that the offense could get the ball back. In the end, it didn't work; Wilder got zero yards on three carries and it was actually the Rams' Eric Dickerson who broke the record that year.
Suffice it to say, the Jets were not pleased. When the Buccaneers went on the road to play New York again in 1985, the Jets got their revenge with a non-stop barrage of scoring. The final tally was 62-28, which remains the most points the Buccaneers have ever allowed in a single game.
NOTABLE CONNECTIONS
• Buccaneers Head Coach Todd Bowles held the same position with the Jets from 2015-18. Bowles also began his NFL coaching career with the Jets in 2000, serving as the defensive backs coach on Al Groh's staff.
• Buccaneers Assistant Coach Tom Moore was an offensive consultant for the Jets in 2011.
• Jets wide receiver Tyler Johnson originally entered the NFL as a fifth-round pick by the Buccaneers out of Minnesota in 2020. He played two seasons for the Bucs, catching 48 passes for 529 yards and two touchdowns.
• Jets Special Teams Assistant Kevin O'Dea has had two different stints on Tampa Bay's coaching staff. He was part of Tony Dungy's staff from 1996-2021, working as an assistant on both offense and defense. O'Dea returned to the Buccaneers in 2014 to work on Lovie Smith's staff, spending two years as the Special Teams Coordinator.
• Buccaneers outside linebacker Haason Reddick spent the 2024 season with the Jets after being traded to New York from Philadelphia. Reddick appeared in 10 games and started one for the Jets, recording one sack.
• Tampa Bay kicker Chase McLaughlin spent one game with the Jets during the 2020 season. He did not attempt a field goal but made both of his extra point tries.
• Buccaneers Special Teams Coordinator Thomas McGaughey held the same post with the New York Jets in 2014.
• Mike Caldwell, back this year for a second stint on the Buccaneers' staff, was the assistant head coach and linebackers coach on Todd Bowles' Jets staff from 2015-18.

ADDITIONAL 2025 CHANGES/DEVELOPMENTS OF NOTE
Buccaneers:
• The Buccaneers roll into 2025 with their fourth offensive coordinator in the last four years. This year's transition, however, is a bit different than the last two. In 2023 and 2024, Dave Canales and Liam Coen, respectively, came to town with entirely new offensive systems that the players had to absorb. In 2025, the Buccaneers followed the departure of Coen to be the Jacksonville Jaguars' head coach by promoting former Pass Game Coordinator Josh Grizzard from within. Grizzard will certainly evolve the Bucs' offense in new ways and have his own spin on play-calling, but the basic system remains the same, offering a very helpful continuity for a team that is also returning all of its offensive regulars from a unit that finished in the top five in 2024 in net yards, points scored, rushing yards and passing yards. After Grizzard's promotion, the Buccaneers also hired one of his former colleagues, Kefense Hynson, to be the team's new pass game coordinator.
• To celebrate their landmark 50th season, the Buccaneers are unveiling a new sort of throwback uniform in 2025. In addition to the popular "Creamsicle" togs that they will don for the Thursday night game against Atlanta in Week 15, the Bucs are also wearing, for this season only, a white version of their original uniforms worn during the 1976 season. Those uniforms will make their debut in the home opener against the Jets in Week Three and will be broken out again when the Bucs play at Seattle in Week Five, a game that is a battle of the NFL's two expansion teams from 1976.
• While Todd Bowles remains the play-caller for Tampa Bay's defense, he did make some changes to his defensive coaching staff. Mike Caldwell, who was part of the Bucs' staff from 2019-21 when Bowles was the defensive coordinator, returns to tutor the inside linebackers. Larry Foote has moved from inside linebackers to outside linebackers and is also the team's run game coordinator. George Edwards, who previously coached the outside linebackers, is now the pass game coordinator.
• The Buccaneers have a handful of significant injury concerns to monitor as the 2025 season opens. Wide receiver Chris Godwin continues his return from a series lower leg injury suffered in Week Seven of last season and All-Pro left tackle Tristan Wirfs underwent arthroscopic knee surgery in July. Both players are in doubt for Week One but neither was placed on the reserve/PUP list, preserving hope that they would miss fewer than the four games required by getting that designation. Wide receiver Jalen McMillan sustained a severe knee strain in Week Two of the preseason against Pittsburgh and is expected to be sidelined for at least half of the regular season. He is currently on injured reserve but can be designated for return.
• The changes made to the kickoff process by the NFL during the offseason appear to have impacted the Buccaneers' strategy for that play in a significant manner. Now that a touchback on a ball caught or landing in the end zone puts the ball at the receiving team's 35, the Buccaneers will likely rely less on touchbacks, which they produced on more than 75% of their kickoffs last year. With that in mind, the team took kick coverage units into serious consideration when shaping the 53-man roster and multiple players – including linebacker John Bullock, cornerback Josh Hayes, outside linebacker Markees Watts and wide receivers Ryan Miller and Kameron Johnson – made the team in large part due to their special teams contributions.
Jets:
• The Jets made a regime change in 2025 after firing both Head Coach Robert Saleh in October and General Manager Joe Douglas in November of last season. Taking their places are Aaron Glenn, formerly the Detroit Lions' defensive coordinator, and Darren Mougey, a long-time staffer in the Denver Broncos' personnel department. Glenn brought Tanner Engstrand with him from Detroit, where he had been the passing game coordinator, to serve as his offensive coordinator. He also hired Steve Wilks, a former head coach in Arizona and Carolina, to be the team's defensive coordinator.
• After bringing in new leadership, the Jets cut ties from their recent past by releasing quarterback Aaron Rodgers, wide receiver Davante Adams and linebacker C.J. Mosley. Rodgers had spent two seasons in New York after leaving Green Bay, starting 18 games and compiling a 6-12 record in those contests. The Jets gave former Bears and Steelers quarterback Justin Fields a two-year $40 million deal to be Rodgers' successor.
• The Jets had three first-round draft picks in 2022 and nailed them all with cornerback Sauce Gardner at the fourth-overall spot, wide receiver Garrett Wilson and 10th and edge rusher Jermaine Johnson at 26th. This offseason, the team unsurprisingly picked up the fifth-year options on all three players, and not long after was able to reach new multi-year deals with Gardner and Wilson.
• Jets starting guard Alijah Vera-Tucker suffered a torn triceps during practice prior to the Falcons' season-opener against Pittsburgh and had to placed on season-ending injured reserve.

WHAT TO WATCH FOR
• The Buccaneers have started the season with two consecutive victories for the fifth year in a row. With a win over the Jets, they would have a 3-0 record to start the season for the first time since 2005.
• Chase McLaughlin has scored 270 points in just over two seasons as the Buccaneers' kicker. He already ranks 10th on the team's all-time scoring list and with seven more points would pass James Wilder for ninth place.
• Running back Rachaad White rushed for 65 yards and a touchdown in the Bucs' Monday night win in Houston and now is on the verge of breaking into the franchise's all-time top 10 in that category. White has 2,163 rushing yards as a Buccaneer, which means he needs 11 more to pass Ronald Jones (2,174) for that 10th spot.
• QB Baker Mayfield moved into the top five in team history in touchdown passes with two more against Houston, giving him 74 since he joined the Buccaneers in 2023. With three more scoring tosses he would move up yet another spot, passing Vinny Testaverde (77) for fourth place.
NOTABLY QUOTABLE
• Head Coach Todd Bowles on QB Baker Mayfield's scrambling ability on third down and how deflating that can be for other teams: "That's a nightmare. I mean, that's a nightmare. We've had it happen to us once or twice. When you've got them all covered up and you expect to get pressure and the quarterback escapes and you do everything the right way, that's a problem. That creates a whole other issue."
• Quarterback Baker Mayfield on the performances of running backs Bucky Irving and Rachaad White in the win at Houston: "They feed off each other. You think about the mentality in that room…Obviously, everybody wants the ball, but there's only one of them. To see them feed off each other, understand they'll get their opportunities and take advantage of them – I think they both did that. Rachaad gave us a huge spark running the ball midgame, and Bucky in the pass game, as well, being able to extended some things. It still goes back to the O-line, tight ends, and [wide] receivers blocking, being able to create some holes. There were good lanes there for them, but every once in a while, those guys make a lot of people miss and break tackles. It's fun to watch them play off each other."
• Safety Antoine Winfield Jr. on what type of challenge it is going against WR Garrett Wilson: "He is really good. I remember we played against him before. We have [had] joint practice with him, and I was able to see him live. He is a good guy -- he can go, he can go -- we have to have eyes on him everywhere he is."
• Running back Bucky Irving on the effort of the offensive line and running backs to get the run game going: "Going into a game, we always want to establish the run. We know everything starts up front with the offensive line. [It is] just being able to trust in those guys every time we get the opportunity to run the ball. [We have a] belief that they are going to open up the holes, and we [have to] trust our progression, go through our reads and do what we do."
• Safety Tykee Smith on returning home after two weeks on the road to start the season: "I look forward to it. For us to be able to get back in front of the fans -- [we have] been on the road the last two games, traveling . To be able to play in front of our fans will be a good one."
